A friend of a friend had their car deemed "totaled" by Travelers and although the damage was cosmetic, it was in the insurance company's best interest to "total" the car and pay out the small amount of money it was "worth" rather than to have it fixed.

  1. Hah! Oz! (Definitely not, hehe!)

I know of this difference in terminology – I did some work for Travelers in the past and learned they changed their business name for the UK for that precise reason!

Thanks so much, +Jason Kirk! You rock!

  2. All pretty standard stuff I'm afraid. The sad fact is that people's cars are always worth more to them than the market value and insurance companies work on commercial value rather than sentiment. If people want to get more for their cars than they're worth, then insurance premiums for everyone would need to increase to cover that.

If they've lost out, they can sue the other party for any losses, providing they have evidence of that loss.
