WordPress Tip

Are you creating a site but don't have the content for it yet? Do you also want to hide your development behind the scenes without worry of the public seeing what you're up to?

Do you want to be able to visit your real home page when you're logged in as an administrator and not have to see the "coming soon" page? Do you want to have a fancy count-down to when your site goes live? Do you want it to continue to be useful and use it during maintenance upgrades to your site?

Well, this is the plugin for you!

(I liked it so much, I went Pro and bought the developer license.)

  1. What I'm still looking for: developing a new theme on an existing site. I tried 'Theme Switcher' and another one, but they mess up your existing widgets and menus. I ended up installing WP on a dormant domain as a sub-domain – meaning you have to transfer settings and files once you want to go live (which actually wasn't that much work, but it depends on your theme, obviously).

  2. I can appreciate your frustration. I wish the menus and widgets were either omnipresent or theme-specific with memory if the theme is deactivated then reactivated…

  3. Well, the plugin claims you can work independently on your new theme. But then things still were changed on the live site. Perhaps it depends on both themes used (admittedly, the live one was a bit outdated – technically) and perhaps I didn't read the manual (duh!)…. Anyway, I go for safe from now on – just a fresh install on a subdomain.
