Oh good! I'm doing something right.

Referrals are the only form of business I do these days. I love referrals because people are more accountable. Plus – when I have good clients, I love to keep them. It takes less energy to keeping an ongoing relationship with a cilent than to create new relationship with a new client.

  1. That's totally how my business built it's self (and I do mean that… I never really started my business…. just one day realized I needed a business license).  The customers that I have I actually still really enjoy working with.

  2. That's awesome, Bob! Same here – though I need to thin down on some clients just because I'm having a hard time keeping up with demand. This is where I either raise my rates or just choose the clients who are the most enjoyable to support, huh? 🙂

I somewhat think that in the near future I may be forced to hire an employee which scares the crap out of me because I'm not a business guy.  Thinning out clients isn't an option in my case because the majority of my business relies on things to break….. if no servers break one week I get a week off but also don't make money so I need to have the pool of customers because it means I'm less likely to have a week with nothing.

  4. I understand how you feel, Bob! I have also been considering this, but haven't found the right person to hire.

    I've been battling with "seasoned" vs. "green" people and there are merits to both – and drawbacks to both. In my experience, the seasoned colleagues can be a "brick wall" or – more of a burden to hire, though their work can be exemplary when on target. They also are more expensive than a "green" person. The right "green" person could be taught to serve well, and are less expensive, though offering constructive criticism would need to be taken well – so it's really down to who does a good job, serves well and makes our job easier. I haven't found that person yet either!

  5. Chains of trust cannot be underestimated. Freelancing is less visible of a problem in the programming world, but it's still there in the form of unending chains of short-term contract work.

That is actually one place where it is a little more complicated for me than you for the simple fact that I am the only person physically working on my customer's billions of dollars of equipment.  If I bring someone on it has to be someone that I know and can absolutely fully trust….  I actually could care less about green vs seasoned because I can show them what they need to know and there are ALWAYS people off-site that they are working with but to trust that person to be the only one in the cage/room with over a million dollars of hard drives and working with single pieces of equipment that are worth a quarter million in the size of a pizza box is exceptionally scary.
