I’m in the market for a new lawnmower

Does anyone have an electric or battery-powered push mower they love? (Or… hate?)

I’d love to know!

I’m also open to just buying another battery for my DIY lawnmower. Here’s what I did back in 2007.

It’s used 2 batteries since then. I didn’t use my mower last year because I didn’t feel like buying another battery!

Are electric plug-in mowers a pain in the butt? I understand they’re:

1. Cheaper to buy ($150 – $200)
2. Cheaper to run ($5 – $10 for the whole season!)

P.S. Yes, I know I look like Fred Flintstone in drag!

  2. Do you chop firewood and pluck chickens, too?

  3. Jean Egan says:

Hehe! Nah, though I'd love to have a wood stove, we're not that green.

  4. I wish I was more tech savvy. I've got all kinds of voice overs in my head to this.

I've been meaning to ask? So you got tired of pushing that rolling trimmer, huh? I know a couple of people that have used electric. One hates it because their yard is not well suited, the other one is fine with his. I spent money on a cheap little gas powered one thinking my tiny yard doesn't need anything bigger. That was a mistake, especially when my yard is not flat. Don't make the same mistake.

Hi Loc – thanks for continuing to think this through and offer advice!

I really like my reel mower, but our grass was already too long to attend to it. It would look like I bent down and chewed on the grass myself, hehe!

I posted a similar request on Facebook and a nearby friend loaned me his very OLD Black and Decker plug-in mower. (so old, it has a metal deck!)

Because our yard is relatively small and flat – with only 1 tree in the middle of it, it shouldn't bee too big of a deal for the plug-in. The only thing that (obviously) is a bit of a bother is wrangling with the cord. They should make a retractible dealie for the cord to make it easier.

  7. Loc Tran says:

Cool. Yep, that was one of the reason, dealing with the cord, but also that it did not provide enough cutting power. Good luck with yours.

  8. I use a push mower
    no petrol
    no battery
    just push

I have a reel mower, too Graham! My lawn was too long to mow with it, though :(

  10. borrow neighbors to get it down
    they are good on lawn
    hard work on grass

  11. Jean Egan says:

Yup, I'm borrowing my friend's electric plug-in mower right now! My husband it down to a manageable height, now I'm ready to maintain it with my reel mower. Sometimes it just grows too quickly!

    Nice to meet you, Graham!

  12. good to meet you too, Jean
    cheers from downunder
